The workshop
Ipswich River Labs is a small, independent R&D shop in Massachusetts. Most emergency comms gear is sold as parts: a radio here, an app there, a lot of taped-together kit that nobody can run under stress. We build the finished thing, test it, write the documentation, and ship it.

The missionWe help people build better capabilities for themselves, their families, and their communities, so that when the time comes they are more resilient today than they were yesterday. We help build the infrastructure and resources they need in times of peace and calm, before they are needed, so when the time comes, the resources and the community are there.
The goal, said plainlyWe enable and equip you so that when the time comes, you are ready. "When the time comes" stays unspecified on purpose. The frame is readiness, never dread.
Who we serveProviders: the ones who provide for and protect a family. We believe in and support the people who keep showing up, keep being trustworthy, and keep getting things done.
How we workWe are integrators at heart. We find experts and incorporate their knowledge, technology, and expertise to help our clients and their communities become more capable. We are in it for the long game: endurance over bursts, together over alone.
How we carry ourselvesBuild relationships, speak the truth, and seek to understand. Be 1% better every day, making a difference, not a point.
We equip for the likely first, so the unlikely never gets to make anyone's choices for them. Preparation is what lets good people stay good when it counts. The unglamorous needs are our lane; the tactical glamour is not.
Gear is just stuff: relationships are more capable and worth more than anything a piece of kit will get you. Organization is what turns capable people into a team, and the best-equipped rarely beat the best-organized. Capabilities happen when people, resources, information, and geography come together into a shared picture. And you have to be prepared for no one to come rescue you in times of need: people must be prepared to be their own and their community's quick reaction force.
What community meansCommunity means people taking care of each other. That is who we build for. Communities are built from different strengths, and we build for all of them. Communities often already have the people and resources they need to thrive; our goal is to help connect them. We behave like the good neighbor: useful before paid, knowledge shared freely, help offered before it is asked for.
Where we standWe support the civilian defense industry. We do not promote violence or the overthrow of any government, including those within the United States. We believe in peace through strength. And privacy is a right, not a privilege: it is why nothing we sell phones home, why no product needs an account, and why you own everything outright.
How we build
- Self-hosted by default. No account required to function, no phone-home. What we hand off runs on hardware you own.
- Documented and repairable. Standard connectors, published bills of materials, and manuals we write ourselves.
- Licensing done right. GMRS, MURS, and Part 90, sorted out for you. Encryption only where the law allows it.
- A paper backup for everything. Every electronic deliverable ships with a printed fallback for when screens fail.
- American-made, small-batch. Open designs where possible. Built here.
Your data. We collect the email you hand us, with the signup date, page, and consent version, so we can tell you when a drop lands. We do not sell or rent it. The privacy policy covers the rest, including the services we use to run and improve the site.
The workshop itself
We design the kit, build it, test it, write the manual, and answer your email. Small-batch by choice: every system that leaves this shop was assembled and tested in-house by the team that designed it.
